"Elderly Care"

About: Russells Hall Hospital Russells Hall Hospital / General surgery

(as a relative),

My mother has been in RHH twice in 12 months, both time on Ward C3 and Evergreen Ward.

On C3 she has food left for her to eat but no support to feed, The drinks are left on the table but out of reach at the side of her bed. Myself and family have taken food for her to eat (and help her improve) but this food is never charted on her nutrition form. Decisions by the Medical Team were passed to a family member (and not to me as NOK)  Her first discharge was arranged with NO physio in place and no follow up until I asked.

Today  I was left a message stating that my mum would be ready for discharge later despite no consulting, care plan info or her pressure sore improving.

The care for the elderly at RHH is lacking and for a Doctor to pass on medical information and change in care, to a family visitor and NOT the next of Kin is shocking.

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback about your mother’s care on ward C3.

We are very sorry to learn about your concerns about your mother’s nutrition and hydration and lack of appropriate communication when she was being discharged.

We always aim to provide the highest standards of care to all our patients and relatives so we apologise for falling short of those standards on this occasion.

We have forwarded your comments to the lead nurse of C3 but would welcome the opportunity to investigate this matter further. Should you like us to do this, please contact the Patient Advice & Liaison Service (PALS) on 0800 073 0510 or e-mail dgft.pals@nhs.net
