"On the Orthopaedic waiting list since February 2017."

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as the patient),

The Arch on my right foot has collapsed-I saw the doctor beginning of 2015 at Irvine Central. At that time I was offered an operation but decided to try a specially made Insole.

The insole helped during the next year but my foot was beginning to become rather painful when walking and I saw the doctor again in 2016 and agreed to have the surgery on my right foot.

I have been unable to carry out many of my usual tasks etc. during 2016 due the discomfort while walking.[ has been a wasted year as far as I am concerned ]

I was placed on the Orthopaedic waiting list on in Feb 2017.

In June 2016 I enquired ,through email where I was in the list. The reply informed me that unfortunately the doctor had been off ill with the subsequent effect of their waiting list being put further behind where it should be. An estimated time could be August/September for the Op.

I sent a 2nd E-mail in Sept 2017 and was told the earliest time for the op could be October/November 2017.

My 3rd E-mail in Nov. didn't receive a reply.

I have suffered 3 dislocations of my Left Hip during the past 8 years -the last 2 occuring in April 2016 and 2017.

I was seen by a differnt doctor in October 2017 re the frequent dislocations-they offered me another operation should it happen again but I said I was waiting for surgery to my right foot and would reconsider the hip after the foot operation .

They commented that the op to my foot may help the hip problem

Through this doctor I am now attending Physio. to strengthen the muscles in my left leg.

I have been wondering if a discussion has taken place between the two doctors re my physical condition and is the reason my foot Op. is being delayed.

I find it very frustrating that no-one tells you what is happening it only takes a few minutes to send an E-mail

Thank you

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear caprington,

I am so sorry, it sounds like you are having a really tough time with your health. Not only that, I can appreciate that the unknown must be very difficult. Waiting without having a plan must be really frustrating.

There are two general points I would like to make. Firstly, unless a consultant has specifically asked for communication by email, for a lot of reasons, this is not a robust method of communication. Phoning the consultant's secretary is much more likely to provide accurate information. Secondly, with all operation but arguably, particularly with Orthopaedics, the landscape shifts constantly. The icy weather can wreak havoc to the operation lists, so unfortunately, emergencies do impact on waiting lists.

Having said that, to establish what the situation is in your case, I would need your details and at the very least, I can try to find out where you are on the list.

I wonder if you could take time to contact me with your details (name and date of birth) on 01563 826222 or email me at Eunice.goodwin@aapct.scot.nhs.uk.

Kindest regards,

Eunice
