"Staff outstanding"

About: North Devon District Hospital / General surgery

(as the patient),

I had my gallbladder removed by day surgery last week and really felt I had to say thank you.  The staff were outstanding and very caring, particularly Deb, Sharon and a nurse with glasses and blond and green hair (sorry have forgotten her name), but all the staff including surgeon, anaesthetist and his assistants, the porter and everyone were fantastic.  I couldn't have had better care.

I'd not been in to hospital for any type of surgery before and my only comment would be that I hadn't really been told of items I would possibly need (apart from medication, glasses and walking stick- all of which didn't apply to me) I managed without a dressing gown (was lent another gown to cover my modesty) and slippers but I popped on my shoes for toilet etc. A book if I had been waiting would have been good but as it turned out I was in surgery within an hour and a half so that didn't apply.

The only one downside was the wait for my mediaction.  I was ready to leave at 2.30pm and despite my medication being ordered at 11am (I overheard the telephone request call) it was not ready until 4.30pm.

Thank you

I am sorry to read that you had your gallbladder removed last week, however I would like to thank you for taking the time to share your story. It is pleasing to learn that you received outstanding care from the staff who looked after you, and that your first experience of being in hospital for an operation was not too stressful for you.

I am sorry that you were not informed of all the useful personal items to bring with you and have shared your comments with the relevant staff in order they may review the hospital leaflet (Coming into hospital), however I am glad you managed to care for yourself and that you had a short wait for surgery.

I also apologise that you had to wait an additional two hours before being able to return home as you were awaiting your medication. The Pharmacy department at the North Devon District Hospital (NDDH) can get very busy at times and it is vital that you received the correct medication before you left, although this involved a delay.

I hope that you make a speedy recovery and are able to enjoy any Christmas and New Year celebrations.

I have forwarded your feedback to the Manager of the Day Surgery Unit where it will be gratefully received, and to the Head of Pharmacy to raise awareness of your concerns regarding delays to receiving your medication to take home. Once again, please accept our apologies regarding this delay. Should you wish to give us more detail surrounding this issue, please contact the Patient Advice & Liaison Service (PALS) on either ndht.pals@nhs.net or 01271 314090 who would be more than happy to support you.

Kind regards

Jayne
