"Planned mastectomy and breast reduction"

About: Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford) / Breast care and breast surgery

After a positive mammogram, I had a mastectomy with a reduction on my other breast. My treatment from the very first moment, from the biopsy through to the operation and beyond, has been first class. I have been fully involved all the way through in all decisions and the staff have all treated me with the utmost respect and dignity. I originally was having day surgery but needed to stay in overnight. The following day I was even given an apology because of having to stay in the day surgery ward as there were no beds on the normal ward. I replied that the apology was unnecessary as I felt I was on a normal ward. The consultants, surgeons, breast care nurses and nurses are second to none in my opinion. My operation this time was in the Women's Health Unit which was not built when I had breast cancer 11 years ago. That time, all my experience was in the main hospital, but again I could not have asked for better treatment from start to finish. As I said recently - Nobody wants to have this experience but if you have to have it, have it here! Thank you everyone for looking after me so well.
