I was referred to Guys cancer unit for radiotherapy treating a BCC ( Basil Cell Carcinoma )
I have been so impressed with every aspect of my treatment so far. The building has been designed with patient input and with the open plan layout means the building really doesn't feel like a hospital.
The doctor , nurses and radiotherapist team are all brilliant and make you feel very comfortable.
I always arrive early and so far I have been seen before my appointment time.
However , if I do have to wait this will not be a problem as the waiting areas have tables and chairs arranged in a casual manner , giving the unit a very comfortable atmosphere.
I understand this is the only unit in Europe where the accelerators are not located in the basement.
Some patient feedback reported that going into a basement area for treatment made them feel uncomfortable /nervous and this feedback was taken into consideration when designing the cancer unit.
Naturally , the extra work/cost entailed in reinforcement etc of an upper floor to accommodate these very heavy accelerators was quite substantial .
So top marks for taking patient views into consideration ; personally I would have voted for a basement unit and then been able to spend the equivalent cost on extra accelerators / delivery of the service. However , this is very subjective and doesn't detract from the wonderful state of the art facilities at the unit.
I am now half way through my treatment and will leave another review after trearment has been completed .
"Amazing care and facilities at Guys cancer unit."
