"Hairmyrers' Angels in Wards 4 and 6"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres

(as a relative),

Since January when the cancer was diagnosed, Joy endured 3 operations and we thought it was beaten, but we were wrong. And God graciously decided to take her home in October.

It may seem a strange thing to say, but God blessed us both during this difficult time. He showed us immense kindness through the NHS.

God blessed us with a wonderful group of healthcare professionals. Right from our family doctor through the consultants and surgeons to the nursing and support staff. They were all kind and caring. They eased our journey and helped us deal with each step. Things that stand out in my mind are

Our family doctor who visited Joy at home when she was unable to go to the clinic.

The busy consultant I met on the stairs one day and who took the time to stop and encourage me.

The anesthetist who took special care to make sure Joy didn't suffer from post-op nausea. He even visited her in the ward afterwards to make sure she was OK.

The Doctors who looked after Joy in her last weeks. They were professional but also let us know that they really cared for us too.

The caring nurses who arranged for my sons and me to sit with Joy 24 hours a day so she wasn't alone. Nothing was ever too much trouble for them.

The kindly Hostesses who always made sure we had a cup of tea or coffee.

And especially the one Palliative Care Nurse who told me that Joy's faith was rippling through the ward affecting people.

And there were plenty of "God moments" too. Like Joy's first overnight hospital stay. God made sure she wasn't lonely by placing a South African nurse in the ward. You should have heard the pair of them nattering away!

And towards the end she met a young nurse also with a strong faith. It was wonderful to see them encouraging each other.

I am really very very grateful to all the staff who crossed our paths. You were a huge blessing to us both. Thank you for easing Joy's journey from this world to the next.I will never forget you

Dear A Grateful Husband

Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a detailed account of your recent experience. You have really touched the hearts of many of us who have had the pleasure of reading this. I am delighted to see that during such a difficult time yourself and Joy were supported by a varied team of healthcare professionals.

It is so important that we work together as a team to focus on individual needs. It is reassuring to hear that Joy was given care and compassion from many members of the healthcare team and I will ensure that your comments are shared with them.

Thank you again for taking time to share your comments, it really is appreciated and means a great deal to the staff involved in Joy's care. Hearing that their support has made a difference to you during Joy's journey is important to us all.

My thoughts are with you at this sad and difficult time.

With love from

Lise
