"Very poor experience"

About: Peterborough City Hospital / Maternity

Very disappointing experience! After having a baby with shoulder dystocia previously I was quite apprehensive about the birth. The first midwife I had was fantastic, very supportive and explained everything they had in place if it happened again but was very positive and personable. However we then had a change of midwife who couldn't have been less interested! Apart from physically being there ( I was high risk) they were of no support. After around 4 hours I raised my concerns that my baby was stuck, they ignored my worries again and again, after a few more hours and my birthing partners becoming increasingly concerned they reluctantly called a doctor. The doctor came in looked at the babies monitor, talked to the midwife and said your baby isn't stuck . I was made to feel like I was over reacting and being a nuisance! Another 5 hours passed before my baby had moved down enough and low and behold she was stuck fast!!! She had one arm wrapped around her cord and both arms then wedged firmly behind her head. The only good thing I have to say about my care is when they hit the alarm those that came running in knew what they were doing and had her out in a reasonable time although causing damage to me which needed extensive stitching. Also baby suffered with minor erbs palsy to her left arm because of her traumatic delivery. This could all have been avoided if I had been listened too and not made to feel like i was making a fuss about nothing. I will never give birth here again.

I am so sorry to hear about your experience and I am obviously concerned about the comments you have posted. We want to ensure all of our patients receive good quality care and I am disappointed that this is not what has happened in your case.

If you would like to discuss this in more detail please do contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service on 01733 673405. Once again my apologies that not all of your encounters have been positive.

Regards

Lesley Crosby
