"Waiting for procedure"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Plastic Surgery

(as the patient),

I have been waiting well over a year for a procedure which scheduled earlier this week. I was in hospital, prepped for surgery, psychologically prepped also, but was then told that due to en emergency the operation would not happen and that it was now scheduled for the following day.

Day 2 - prepped and ready to be taken to theatre. Had come to terms with the huge disappointment from the day before and was looking forward to having the long awaited procedure completed. Operation cancelled due to staff shortages.

Bitterly disappointed yet again. I understand the Neuroscience theatre does not run 24 hours so if an operation runs late into the day this can affect the schedule for the following day. To be fair the consultant was brilliant, she did her utmost to try and get me into another theatre, in Monklands or anywhere in the vicinity, to try and counter both her and mine frustrations.

I have been built up twice for this operation and left disappointed on both occasions. My partner, who lives on the other side of Scotland, had booked time off work to provide care at home. it is not always easy to keep booking time off, having these last minute cancellations makes it difficult to plan ahead, I have been told the procedure will be re-booked for 4-6 weeks time but I have to be prepared for a re-run of this preparation and then disappointment.

I feel totally fatigued. this has not been the best experience.

Dear indigoft93

Thank you for taking the time to post on Care Opinion.

I am sorry to read that your surgery has been cancelled twice at short notice. We make every effort to avoid any cancellation as we do recognise the distress it can cause, and we know there is a lot of planning involved when preparing to come in to hospital and how upsetting and frustrating it is when that surgery does not happen.

I will share your post with the Chief Nurse and General Manger for the service.

Kind Regards

Nicole

Dear indigoft93

I have spoken with the clinical team and we offer our sincere apologies that your surgery was cancelled on two separate occasions. Upon cancelling the surgery we tried to do everything possible to re-schedule however we could not re-arrange this at short notice. I am advised that you have a new date for surgery and we will make every effort to make sure that this surgery takes place as planned.

Again, please accept our sincere apologies that this has been your experience.

Kind Regards

Elaine Burt
