I was referred to the service by my GP as I was suffering with debilitating physical symptoms resulting from depression and anxiety. I was extremely sceptical about whether I would be able to get any kind of benefit from the service as my view was how could 'talking' offer any kind of release given the physical manifestations of my difficulties. During the period of intervention I suffered a number further extremely stressful situations the consequence of which resulted in panic attacks. I was taught a number of breathing techniques which enabled me to calm down and reduce my anxiety at night time as I was having problems sleeping. In addition in talking through difficult emotional situations I was helped to come to terms with issues in my relationships with others as well as helping me to rationalise my responses. For the first time in my life I was able to discuss things in an open and honest way. Things that ordinarily I would be embarrassed speaking about, particularly family situations, as previously I would have felt that other peoples negative behaviour would be seen as a reflection on me. I was helped me to unpick this skewed view of myself. even after the first session I felt 'lighter'. I would say overall my mental health has significantly improved and whilst I need further treatment for a very specific incident, I would highly recommend the service.
