"Unacceptable care for my loved one"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / Stroke Care (2 south)

(as a relative),

My loved one was admitted to this ward. At first it seemed very good. 4 days after suffering a stroke, as she was too drowsy to be assessed by speech and language the nurses told us she would be assessed the following day. After 4 days of no food she was starving. We had asked for an NG to be put in place but was told they wanted to give her a chance of swallowing. (Not acceptable as nice guidelines state within 24hrs of admission if an initial swallow screen is failed another form should be put in place for feeding).

As she couldnt swallow she aspirated on her own secretions and got a chest infection. We had also asked for medication to stop this happening. I am utterly shocked at the infection control precautions. Staff changing drips with no gloves on... no alcohol swabs being used. Cannulas out of date tissuing. Catheters being emptied with no gloves on. Completely unacceptable. Infection control would shut this ward down.
