"The treatment worked but I waited a long time"

About: Woodend Hospital / Radiology

(as a service user),

I did start having pain and dr appointments in October 2017.

I had a swelling on my back which was the size of a small egg. My GP referred me straight away to a specialist as they were concerned by the size of this mass and that it grew rapidly.

I got referred to a surgeon 2 weeks later (which is not long but knowing that it could be even a tumour according to my GP I did find this waiting time particularly long).

I was offered MRIs (results took 4 weeks so more stress painkillers and uncertainty) then a biopsy then more appointments and the results of the biopsy were out in February but were inconclusive. So basically they did rule out malignancy possibly as the MRIs also suggested thus I was told that we should wait more months to see if my back mass swells. It did grow a bit as the next MRI showed (in around March time) and thus I was offered surgery to perform an open biopsy to finally see what this mass is. this happened in April.

The positive side is that in June after my full recovery I did notice that I no longer need painkillers constantly while I had been using them for months. Now I am not in that much pain and the surgeon helped me get my life back! I am very grateful for this! The only drawback in the story was time. It took so many months to diagnose what this was and offer some relief. At times I did feel left alone as all I was given was painkillers and not a permanent solution. This solution to my problem could have happened possibly faster. the biopsy basically reduced the mass in size and helped it stop putting pressure on my spine and muscles!

I am very happy now!

Dear Sasha Irene,

Thank you for sharing your story and I’m glad to hear that you had a positive outcome – even though it did take a while to get there.

Waiting for results and in the space between appointments can be a stressful, anxious, and as you have mentioned, lonely time. As patients we aren’t always sure where we are in the system and although the teams here do their best to reduce the waiting times – perhaps we could be better at communicating this and offering support for those in between times.

All the comments we receive are fed back to the services we can identify from each story - thanks again for sharing.

Take care,

Kirsten
