"The care by doctors and nurses in A+E..."

About: South Tyneside District Hospital

What I liked

The care by doctors and nurses in A+E was fantastic.

the care by the doctors and nurses on Ward 6 was great.

What could be improved

i was admitted after being examined in A+E. admitted to ward 6 room 9 at roughly 5.45pm seen by the nurse and they took my details and medical history. Then i waited and waited to see a doctor. at around 11:00pm i was moved in to bay 2 bed 4 "i think". I then had to wait till 01:00am to eventually see a doctor. All this time i was unsure if i was stopping in so had no change of clothes or anything. when eventually found out around 01:30am that i would be stopping in it was then to late to get a change of clothes from my wife at home. Saw the consultant in the morning after no sleep what so ever. very pleasant and clearly told me the plans for the day which included a scan of my spine and then depending on the results i would be discharged. i waited till 2:30pm for my scan. then had to wait till 4:30pm to be told the doctor had found a query with my scan. i kept asking the nurse what was going on was told had to wait for the radiographer to file their report. at around 7:30pm i was seen by the orthapedic doctor who had came up to see where the severe pain in my neck was. I had no pain in my neck and never had. He was told by someone that i had pain in my neck and he had been studying the results and could not find anything. "wonder Why

Anything else?

I think it is about time the management of ward 6 should step up and start treating Patients not Numbers.

Maybe if the managment spent more time in the wards and not there offices crunching numbers, saving here saving there. just maybe people would be much happier with there stay in south tyneside hospital.

Must stress the nurses and doctors were fantastic very polite and helpfull but the fact a doctor has a massive area of wards to cover is unacceptable. maybe a nurse practitioner or something should be intorduced to care for the non emergencie cases.

Thank you for taking the time to let us know your views about our services. I am delighted that you found your experience in A&E to be so positive. I will certainly feed your comments back to the staff in the department who I know will appreciate them.

Thank you also for letting us know about your disappointment with the service provided on ward 6, the Emergency Assessment Unit. I offer you my sincere apologies for the delays in treatment you experienced and the lack of communication. I will also pass your comments on to the team so they can reflect on any improvements they can make.

Kind regards

Lorraine Lambert

Chief Executive
