"Fertility Clinic - Ups and Downs."

About: Aberdeen Maternity Hospital / Reproductive Medicine

(as a service user),

I had a follow-up appointment letter to attend and no real clarification of what the appointment was about. I assumed it was to discuss the bloods I had taken at my previous appointment.

The Dr began by saying So, we are here to discuss your Premature Ovarian Failure and what HRT you will need, which was the first time I was made aware of this diagnosis. I burst into tears, to which the Dr replied So why does that upset you?

As I am in my mid-30's and wish to expand my family, it was obviously upsetting especially the manner it was delivered, and I thought the Dr handled the situation very poorly and their bedside manner needs some looking at.

However, the positive which came out of this was my then referral to the counsellor, who was kind, caring and compassionate and made me feel so much better about myself after an hour in their company and I look forward to future appointments with them.

Dear This-is-me

I am so sorry to hear of your recent experience in the Fertility Clinic where you received upsetting news that was unexpected and communicated insensitively, in manner that is not acceptable. I will share your experience with the Fertility team and, while anonymous, this example of poor communication will be discussed at the next Fertility Management Team meeting with the aim to improve the experience of other patients attending the clinic.

On the other hand, your positive meeting with the counsellor is the care we aspire to achieve and this will be shared with her.

Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

Margaret Meredith, Nurse Manager.
