"Choose and Book Trafford NHS"

About: Greater Manchester Trafford General Hospital

(as a relative),

What happened? A lot, Since October 2016 (still ongoing). How did I feel? Let down and completely betrayed by a lack of competence, to put it VERY nicely (not that I feel it's deserved, but whatever).

To have my own mother FINALLY get an appointment at the hospital of her choice, only to return home in floods of tears after finding out her eventual appointment has been CANCELLED is indescribably insulting, and if this matter is not resolved as soon as possible I will take the matter further, and will not think twice about legal advice.

A member of the Choose and Book department has decided it would be fantastic to cancel the one appointment that was necessary, after 9 months of being bounced around from pillar to post with different irrelevant departments.

My mother has a complication with her toenails and fingernails, whereby they curl up and eventually grow in the opposite direction, cutting into her toes and thumbs and causing excruciating pain. She is DESPERATE for surgery on her thumb in particular. We have managed to get an appointment at a podiatrist's practice for the toenails, which aren't as much of a problem as her thumbs, however, the problem arises due to the fact that a podiatrist is not authorised to carry out surgery on hands, only feet.

To actually arrange an elusive appointment with the CORRECT DEPARTMENT is astonishingly difficult, mainly due to the fact that the call handlers at the Choose and Book service on the phone are completely unaware of which department is relevant to ultimately carry out the correct procedure in order to rectify the thumbnail in question.

My mother was last on the phone to someone who barely understood a word of English, and was told "yes yes yes" in response to my mother's repeated calls for clarification that the call handler has indeed understood what was asked of her - please cancel the 2 INCORRECT bookings at the wrong practices (both at Oaklands Hospital in Salford), and DO NOT CANCEL the booking made at Trafford General Hospital.

To find my mother inconsolable and in pain, angry beyond all belief and her blood pressure through the roof due to the stresses and strains of such a ridiculous, farcical and unnecessarily drawn out process breaks me. It breaks my heart to have my mother's attempts to rectify her medical problems completely neglected, and I will stop at nothing to get this rectified as soon as possible because this has taken FAR too long to address the situation.

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry to learn that your mother's experience of the Choose and Book service was not as positive as we would hope. It is important to us that comments are heard and seen as an opportunity provided to the service to make changes and improvements wherever possible.

Mr Wilkowski, Deputy Directorate Manager for Medicine at Trafford Hospitals explains that the Choose and Book service is a National, NHS England service which is not managed by Trafford Hospital; therefore he is unable to answer your complaints relating to the behaviour of the staff who spoke to your mother. You can contact NHS England at England.contactus@nhs.net with "For the attention of the complaints team" in the subject line.

Mr Wilkowski advises that your mother speaks with her GP regarding her need for surgery and in agreement with the doctor ensures that an appropriate referral route is chosen. In the interim if your mother continues to experience discomfort or pain it may be advisable for her to visit the Urgent Care Centre at Trafford General Hospital for assessment and treatment.
