"Mental health ward closure"

About: NHS Lanarkshire University Hospital Monklands / Mental Health

(as a parent/guardian),

My son has a diagnosis of schizophrenia and requires admission to the local

Psychiatric admission ward ( ward 24 Monklands District General Hospital )

I have recently found out that NHS Lanarkshire plan to close the ward, with patients relocated to Wishaw General Hospital. As a pensioner who lives in Cumbernauld, this would mean a 38 mile return trip in public transport to visit my son. I feel strongly that there should be a local mental health facility to provide care and treatment for patients, and consideration should be given to the impact this closure would have on patient's Family and carers.

Dear G67

Thank you for taking the time to contact us with your comments around the relocation of ward 24, Monklands Hospital.

It is important to highlight the majority of our mental health services are delivered within the localities and this will continue to be the case.

When consideration was given to the relocation of our acute adult inpatient ward to the Wishaw site, we were mindful of the impact this may have on relatives visiting their family members and the importance of maintaining family relationships.

In order to support relatives NHS Lanarkshire has established a Transport Hub in partnership with Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT). This is being implemented from 19th June 2017 beginning at Monklands Hospital and will be rolled out across Lanarkshire during the summer of 2017. The Hub provides a single point of contact for transport requirements and will offer relatives support with transport to other hospital sites. This transport will be able to be booked in advance. This service will be available to support the needs of relatives who may be affected by the changes that are taking place in ward 24, Monklands.

I hope you have found this response helpful. If you have any further concerns or questions you would like to discuss please do not hesitate to contact me on 01698 366760.
