"What makes you special are all the little things you did"

About: Ninewells Hospital / Accident & Emergency Ninewells Hospital / Paediatrics Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance

(as a parent/guardian),

A few weeks ago our young daughter experienced a febrile convulsion whilst at home.

The experience was terrifying - her lips were blue, she appeared to have stopped breathing, and her whole body was limp.

The Paramedics who arrived were truly wonderful, stabilising our daughter and somehow managing to calm us down. On what was clearly a very busy Saturday night in A&E, the nurses and doctors who saw us were excellent, assessing her carefully and explaining everything clearly and succinctly.

Our daughter was moved to Paediatrics for further assessment before being admitted to the Children's Ward. Throughout staff were kind, caring and thoughtful.

Thankfully our daughter recovered quickly and our stay was a relatively short one.

Thank you to the paramedics and all the staff we met at Ninewells, you really were fantastic.

What makes you extra special though are all the little things you did, which meant a lot to an exhausted little girl and her very emotional mum and dad. From the responding paramedics who remembered our daughter’s name and greeted her when we bumped into them hours later; to the nurses who’d already made me up a bed beside my daughter’s cot when we were admitted to the ward; the nursing assistant who made a point of asking me on various occasions whether I had everything I needed, and the lovely domestic who managed to illicit a smile from my daughter. Thank you.

Dear Westend

Thank you for taking the time to feed back on Care Opinion.

Febrile convulsions are extremely frightening to witness and so it must have been a very distressing experience for you and your family. They can be difficult to manage because as your story highlights, as well as treating the child, there are often very anxious patients to manage as well. Therefore, I was so glad to read about the wonderful care that you received from the ambulance crew and all of the staff at Ninewells Hospital.

It would be great to be able to pass on your kind words to the ambulance staff who cared for daughter but I would need a few more details to allow me to identify the right crew. If you would be able to provide some more details you can contact me on 0131 314 0003 or at martinesposito@nhs.net.

I was also really pleased to hear that your daughter recovered quickly and did not have to stay for long in hospital.

Take care

Martin.

Dear “WestEnd”

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience – this must have been an extremely frightening time for all of you. I am so pleased that your daughter recovered quickly and that your stay in Ninewells was a relatively short one.

I have forwarded your story to the services you mentioned and have been asked to thank you for your lovely feedback. This will be shared with staff within the Emergency Department and also on the combined feedback board within Ward 29 for the whole team to see.

Kind regards.

Alison
