"Rude and insensitive member of staff in..."

About: Huddersfield Royal Infirmary

I attended an appointment on 14.06.17 with specialist at 9.20am. It was agreed with myself and the specialist that I would go for an ultrasound on my breast to check if my implants had ruptured.

At that point I said I did not want to have a mammogram and they agreed this was ok and we would talk about my options when we got the results back from the ultra sound.

The specialist said they would stress that I did not want the mammogram doing just the ultrasound so the staff in this department would not go on at me about having an mammogram.

(Their exact words).

I went down to the waiting room for the ultra sound to be carried out.

The person who called me in (unfortunately I do not know their name), said to me you have come for a mammogram have you had one previously.

I explained that I was only having an ultrasound done so the specialist could check to see if my implants had ruptured.

This person then answered me in a very rude and disrespectful way telling me it was a waste of time having an ultra sound it would not show anything, I should have a mammogram.

I explained specialist and I had agreed that I would only have an ultrasound at this point because I wanted to check if my implants had ruptured, before I agreed to a mammogram.

The woman took no notice of what I said and also what the specialist had requested and just went on and on at me about it being a waste of their time doing the ultra sound, because it wouldn't show anything.

By now I was really upset it is hard enough coming to the hospital when you think there may be something wrong with your breast without a member of staff talking to you like this.

I left the room saying well we won't do it if it is a waste of time and are you aware of how hard I found it to come to the hospital today to get this checked out.

I left the hospital in tears and was very upset about the way I had been treated by this person.

To speak to a patient like this is disgusting especially when they were ignoring what the specialist had agreed I would have done. They are not the type of person you should have working in that area dealing with patient who are worried they may have breast cancer.

You need to employ better staff than this or give them better training in how they deal with patients.

Note

specialist did want me to have a mammogram, but understood my concerns regarding my 30 year old breast implants.

He agreed to do the ultra sound first so we could discuss my options after seeing the results from the ultra sound.

The fact that specialist said they would stress that I did not want the mammogram doing just the ultrasound so the staff in this department would not go on at me about having an mammogram, shows that you obviously have a problem with the staff or one member of staff in that department.

You really need to sort this person out either by staff training or moving them into a position where they do not come into contact with patients.
