"Night staff had no compassion"

About: Bradford Royal Infirmary Women's Unit / Gynaecology

(as a service user),

Me and my partner attended ward 12 after being told our babies heart had stopped at 8. 5weeks. I was booked in for a medical procedure and given a lovely side room. The day staff were attentive and caring. Katie and Elsa looked after us really well and comforted us at what was a very sad time.

The night staff however were a different story. One of the nurses asked us what time I had 'passed the products' and I said 'you mean our baby' we knew the exact time as in our eyes I had laboured just as much as I had with my healthy pregnancies. We were floored when she chuckled at how precise we were then laughed in our faces. I will be complaining in writing. I felt as though my baby was nothing and she regarded it as a piece of rubbish, not someone we had created and had plans and dreams for.

Dear Rachikat, my apologies for the delay in responding, due to being on leave, but I assure you this was immediately escalated to the Assistant Chief Nurse and the Senior Sister on the ward. I would also like to offer my most sincere sympathies on the sad loss of your baby and apologise for the distress you experienced because of this incident, which is completely unacceptable.

I am glad to hear that those staff you mentioned were kind and caring, and will make sure that is passed on to them. Can I please ask you to contact me personally on patient.experience@bthft.nhs.uk so we can properly investigate this and taken any action needed. I hope to hear from you soon.
