"Poor advice from Health Visitor"

About: Community Services in Grampian

(as a parent/guardian),

My baby has had breastfeeding issues since birth. My Health Visitor told me he had no physical reason for struggling to breastfeed and that he had no tongue tie - without even looking in his mouth! After 5 horrendous weeks for both my baby and I, I went to see a chiropractor privately, who found out what one of the problems were and sorted it out. Things were much better.

However, my son still has issues. I have been given wrong advice by the Health Visitor and their team, telling me my son's lip tie didn't matter and wasn't the reason for his constant feeding day and night. I had to see a private doctor to confirm the lip tie. And then the advice I was given by my Health Visitor was to refuse milk feeds and night wean (despite my son needing these feeds) in order to get him hungry so he will eat more solids.

I think Health Visitors need to be trained more in breastfeeding matters so they can better support mums and babies. I am furious that my baby was called lazy and I was told I feed him too much when he has a physical problem!

Dear Lilychina,

Thank you for letting us know about your experiences. It is important for new mums to get the correct support and I’m sorry we haven’t managed to get this right for you and your new son – being a mum myself I can understand how frustrating this must be.

I can tell from your post that you haven’t felt listened to and that’s not how we would want you to feel. If you would like to get in touch to speak about your experiences you can contact me by email at kirsten.dickson@nhs.net.

Thanks again for highlighting your concerns – all the feedback we receive on Care Opinion helps us make improvements to each of our services and your story has been shared with the health visiting leads for discussion and learning within their teams.

Take care,

Kirsten
