After struggling for over 2 years supporting my mum, after my fathers death I reached breaking point and decided to make an appointment with carer's support. After discussing my issues I was told about the 'Lets Talk' service. I contacted them and attended a 2 hour for 4 weeks course. Initially I did not feel that it was helping as it was so general even though it was well delivered and felt a safe environment I did not feel my specific issues were getting any better.
At the end of the 4 weeks I had the option to attend 1 to 1 counselling, I ticked the box and thought it would be weeks before they contacted my but I got a call the same day and attend my first 1 to 1 the following week. I must say I was sceptical as my counsellor was a young man and I wondered how someone who probably had not experienced my situation would really understand what I was going through. I must say I was totally wrong, he was kind and caring but also focused on how I could best change my situation.
My counsellor listened and made me realise that the feelings I had were not unusual for someone who was going through what I was going through.
After my first session I felt great, empowered and ready to put into practice strategies to deal with my issues. I felt very assertive and strong and in control of my own life something that I had not felt for over 2 years. At my 2nd session it was agreed by us both that I did not, at this moment in time, need any more counselling. I was told I could contract them again if I felt I needed anymore help but for now I feel happy and strong and I cannot thank them enough for what they have done.
We can talk to friends about our problems, but sometimes we need to talk to someone who is not so emotionally involved to help us see clearly.
