"Mum with Cancer treated poorly"

About: Dr Gray's Hospital / Oncology / Cancer Pathway

(as a relative),

My mum is on a 6 week chemo break, is in week 4 and has been sick for 4 days in a row and was referred to Dr Grays. Whilst she was there, the nursing staff we came into contact with were very direct and not very empathetic. She was heavily sick during the night and asked one of the nurses for a drink to cleanse her mouth and was told to wait another 3 hours until they came round with the tea cart. She wasn't offered a shower in the whole 4 days she was there.

Overall, I don't want my mum treated at Dr Grays but as it is the closest hospital, she will be referred there again.

I am very disappointed in the way she has been treated. Mentally she is finding cancer tough and the whole experience isn't helping.

I would like to see some action taken to improve patient care.

Dear daximusd

I am really sorry that you have had reason to complain about the care your Mum received during her recent stay at Dr Grays. I am happy to discuss the issues that you have raised with your Mum and yourself. My direct line number is 01343 567900 or you can email me at diane.vass@nhs.net.

I fully appreciate that it is a difficult time for your Mum having a diagnosis of cancer and that this recent experience has not helped. I would like to assure you that this is not the service that we strive to provide for our patients, however I am extremely conscious that this admission appears to have caused you concerns about future visits to the hospital and I sincerely apologise for this. I hope the next time you visit Dr Grays you have a positive experience.

Since I am unaware which ward your comment is regarding, I shared your story with the Senior Charge Nurses at our meeting yesterday.
