"Comfort during ERPC for missed miscarriage"

About: New Victoria Hospital / Gynaecology Clinic

(as the patient),

I recently had day surgery after having a missed miscarriage. This was distressing enough in itself, but I had also never had surgery before either so was terrified. I was taken straight to the ward and really through no fault of the hospital spent the next few hours in pain from the tablets I had to take and feeling quite alone and distressed.

The nurse Gwen was nice though obviously busy so could only pop in quite sporadically to check on me. The surgeon popped in to see me and she was very sympathetic and lovely and said she was very sorry that I was in this situation. I did panic a bit once taken in to be anaesthetised, and I think this made me quite distressed when I woke up. I was shaking quite badly and my teeth were chattering.

I just really wanted to write to thank the nurse that was there when I woke up. I wasn't too with it so I didn't catch her name. She was so lovely, she had a very warm and comforting manner and I really felt looked after. She fetched me a heat pack and gave me oxygen and painkillers. I know it sounds odd but she just felt like a mum fussing about and giving comforting squeezes and pats on the head and it really made me feel 100 times better. It felt like she really cared and was concerned and worried for me. I wish I had gotten her name to thank her, it was a really horrid time for me and she really helped and is in exactly the right job!

Dear Lady84

Thank you for taking the time to post on Patient Opinion. I am very sorry to read about your miscarriage and I can only imagine how distressing that was for you.

I found your post particularly touching to read, especially when you spoke about the care you received when you woke up from surgery. Going into hospital for treatment is scary for everyone especially for those that require surgery for the first time. Therefore it does not sound odd to me at all that you say that the nurse felt like a mum in the way that she looked after you. From what you have said, the nurse was able to make you feel safe and I am pleased that you felt cared for at such a horrid time.

I would also like to thank you for other kind comments about Gwen and the surgeon. I will ensure that your kind words are shared with the staff in the New Victoria Hospital. They will be pleased to read that the care they provided to you did make a difference at a difficult time.

Best wishes
Lisa
