"A&E and PAU"

About: Manor Hospital / Accident and emergency

On arriving in a+e yesterday at around 18.30 with my 5year old daughter who had croup, we were advised to go straight through to the nurses station from the main desk which we done. We were then escorted out to the peadiatric waiting area (which was full) by the peadiatric nurse so we sat in the main waiting area. We were shortly called through to be assessed. I was asked several questions then advised to go and sit back in the waiting room. Shortly after we were called through for my daughter to be weighed, the nurse took us to 3 different set's of scales, none of which worked. We were then advised to go and sit back in the waiting area.We were then called through as scales had been found in resus. These were baby scales and the nurse threw their hands in the air as my daughter wouldnt stand on them long enough and they kept going off. Again we went back to sit down before being called back through to AMU as scales had been allocated. I asked why my daughter had had no obs done, the reply I got was that she was too distressed! After she was weighed we went back to sit in the waiting area. The nurse then came and handed me a syringe with her dexamethasone in the middle of the main waiting area and asked me to give it to my daugter. By the time I had given it to her I looked up and the nurse had gone! I threw the syringe in the bin and sat and waited for the nurse to return. At 20.10 I went and asked the night nurse what was happening and also that my daughter had had no obs or anything done. At this point my daughter's temperature was up and her body was working hard to cope with her croup and stridor. We were then assessed by a dr who referred her up to PAU. We arrived on PAU at 21.35 at 23.10 I went up to the nurses station and asked what was happening as we hadn't been seen yet. The nurse said they were waiting for the Dr to come and assess her, I asked if a nurse was supposed to assess her then they looked at the board and realised no-one had seen my daughter. The Dr soon came and halfway through the drs assessment the nurse came into the room to do my daughter's obs.

Although I appreciate how busy the hospital is and how hard the staff work I feel as though the care given was not great considering that my daughter obviously had strider and croup and that her body was working hard to cope with it aswell as having a temperature. I thought that when any person arrived within the hospital their obs were done?
