My 8 month old daughter went into Alder Hey for heart surgery. She was in ICU afterwards, unfortunately she didn't cope well with the surgery and had to have two further operations and was on ecmo for 2 weeks. She fought for 6 long weeks but she lost her fight and passed away.
The staff in ICU were unbelievable. The way the surgeons and consultants/doctors fought for our daughter was amazing; there was no price on her life and they tried absolutely everything they could to save her. The nurses who looked after her were incredible. The care they showed her went above any beyond any job description and they looked after us well too. They always made sure we understood what was happening, and managed to keep us entertained in the long days sat by her bedside.
The consultants kept us well informed throughout and we felt part of the decision making process. My only issue is the way one or two of the conversations were held; I think it is easy to forget sometimes that it's your baby they are talking about, and occasionally some of the consultants were a bit blasé when giving us bad news. This was very rare, but I think worth noting.
The domestic staff were also brilliant.
When she passed away, the bereavement team looked after us so well; Elaine was lovely. They explained everything we needed to do and helped us at every stage.
We are so grateful to the staff for the way they looked after our girl.
