"Smoking"

About: Chesterfield Royal Hospital / Clinical haematology

There is absolutely no way the ban on smoking can be adhered to. I am a regular visitor to this hospital and every time I have to run the gauntlet of ignorant pigs blowing their filth in my direction. I have seen security staff and nurses as well as patients in dressing gowns sitting their and lighting up, all in view of large no smoking notices. What's the point eh? Of putting an article in the paper saying the whole hospital grounds are now smoke free.

You are having a laugh. If you can't or won't stop this awful practice then take the signs down and at least put some ashtrays roundabout.

Thank you for your post about your recent hospital visit.

We share your frustration - there are times throughout the week (especially weekends) when areas in the hospital are being used by smokers with little regard for our wish to be a smoke free site.

Many of our staff are understandably nervous about approaching smokers due to the verbal abuse they receive.

This personally doesn't worry me, but some patients and visitors can feel quite threatening.

I am rather concerned that your post says you have seen staff smoking openly on site, which is against our policy and can be enforced through disciplinary sanctions.

I have also noted your points about signage.

With the help of patients, staff and visitors we have designed some signs that are large scale with 'human' messages and pictures about smoking and how it impacts on others at hospital.

Whilst these will cost money to implement we hope to have them in place soon.

Kind regards Sarah Turner-Saint head of communications
