"All staff were great with my daughter and even managed to glamorise the splint that she had to wear."

About: Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital / Accident & Emergency (Emergency Care) Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital / Physiotherapy Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance

(as a parent/guardian),

My 5 year old daughter dislocated her knee in our back garden. Due to the dislocation we had to call an ambulance to safely uplift her and take her to hospital. They did a great job with her and kept her informed with every move they made.

On arriving at RACH we were informed straight away that the knee cap would have to be put back in place straight away to prevent long term injury. The doctor was honest with my daughter explaining that it would be quick and possibly quite painful but would be over quickly. He carried out the procedure whilst the nurse distracted my daughter by give my her gas and air. Once the knee cap was back in it's place, my daughter was instantly pain free as promised and happy.

All staff were great with my daughter and even managed to glamorise the splint that she had to wear.

The only place where we feel let down is that it has been 5 months and still not received Physio therapy which we were assured 3 times by consultants and our GP that we would receive.

I am delighted to hear that your experience of emergency care within RACH and ambulance services was on the whole positive. It is really important that children feel as comfortable as possible when they are facing such painful and scary procedures so I it is really good to hear that staff went the extra mile to reassure your daughter. I will of course pass your positive feedback onto staff who always need to hear when they have got things right for patients, as it helps them get through days where they face challenges.

Of course you have also got an ongoing issue with physio which is disappointing but I would be happy to help with this. If you would like to email me at carolineclark2@nhs.net with your daughters details I will put you in touch with the physio service directly to see if we can ensure your daughter receives the therapy that she needs.

Dear KJCS

Thank you for sharing your story on Patient Opinion.

A dislocated knee cap can be extremely painful and quite scary to see and so I can imagine it must have been a distressing experience for all of the family. It was nice to hear about the care that your daughter received from the ambulance staff and the doctors and nurses at the RACH. Positive communication and keeping patients informed when treating injuries such as this is so important and so it was pleasing to hear that all of those involved were able to achieve this for such a young patient.

Thanks again for sharing.

Take care

Martin.
