"lack of cleanliness in toilets"

About: Ninewells Hospital / General Medicine

(as the patient),

I posted a story 3 months ago regarding the lack of cleanliness in the male toilets at NInewells Hospital (corridor leading to clinic areas). I stated that they should be improved or shut down. I visited again yesterday and found that they are still filthy and disgusting. I cannot understand why in a hospital these are not maintained to a satisfactory standard of cleanliness. The floor was covered in water and urine and the basins were literally black, They should be shut down immediately, in my opinion. Surely the toilets should be checked regularly throughout the day and cleaned appropriately when necessary?

Dear benjipete

I am sorry to learn that, following your initial feedback in September, we have failed to improve the standard of the gents’ toilets within the Outpatient corridor.

On visiting the said toilet earlier today, my own opinion was that the overall cleanliness could be improved, however the fabric of the facility was most certainly tired and dated.

I have spoken with the Domestic Services Team Leader who confirmed that spot checks are carried out throughout the day, with a daily deep clean of the area each evening. Whilst acknowledging that these toilets are regularly used throughout the day, there should be no excuse for the toilets to be unclean at any time.

Based on your feedback, I have agreed with the Domestic Team Leader that a formal cleaning monitoring tool will be implemented. I will also follow up the fabric issues with our Estates colleagues.

I am extremely sorry that you have had to raise this issue again, but thank you for doing so to enable sustainable improvements to be made in this area. Should you have any further concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me via the Complaints and Feedback Team on 0800 027 5507 (freephone) or email to feedback.tayside@nhs.net

Kind regards.

Update posted by benjipete (the patient)

I am grateful that action is going to be taken this time. I am surprised that action is necessary in the first place. I shall visit these toilets again when I next attend the clinical appointment area and I shall take my camera with me to record & note any improvement/lack of the same.

Thanks for the promise of action to be taken.
