"Grampian have it down to a T"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Cardiology / Coronary Care Unit Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Rheumatology (Joint conditions) Dr Gray's Hospital / Emergency Medicine

(as the patient),

I have a connective tissue disease, this year I have had 3 separate admissions to hospital following Pericarditis and last week, Pancreatitis. The staff in A&E at Dr Grays are superb, they kept me informed, reassured me and the care on the wards was second to none. My only complaint is the lack of set visiting hours, or at least, restricting the number of people allowed. I needed rest, sleep and quiet, yet the constant back and fro of visitors and the noise was annoying.

My latest stay was onto ICU, I told them what my medication I took, even took it in with me, but they went by the online prescription and it was wrong, the system hadn't updated, one was a tapering steroid dose, they wanted me to take double the dose and would not listen when I said I was on half that dosage, aside from that, I cannot fault them. They were kind, helpful and reassuring, from the consultants to the health assistants.

Earlier in the year I had a 10 day stay at Aberdeen with a suspected heart attack, the facilities were outstanding, staff all excellent, and it felt like they were working with me and not just treating me.

I would also add that the Rheumatologists at Aberdeen have gone over and above what I expected, taking time to personally email me when I needed to ask a question relating to my treatment. Dr Basu and his registrar are a credit to the NHS. I am normally quite critical of some NHS care, but Grampian have it down to a T.

Dear maggiei

Many thanks for taking time out to post your feedback on Patient Opinion. Your positive comments will be very well received by all our staff. They will be delighted to know that they are doing such a great job. We strive to deliver person-centred, safe and effective care for all our patients. This includes person-centred visiting which means that this should be agreed with the patient rather than there being organisational norms for visiting hours. This should not however encroach on the privacy of patients who need peace and rest to get well. I am sorry you found this to be a problem.

The difficulties with your medication are a recognised issue. Electronic systems are only as good as the people keeping them up to date. Nonetheless staff should listen to patients as they are often the ones who know their medications best.

We are very grateful to you for bringing your concerns to our attention and also for your praise for the efforts of NHS Grampian staff.

I hope your health is good at the present time.

Kind regards
