"Varicose vein surgery poor after care"

About: King George Hospital / Vascular surgery

Had varicose vein surgery on 8 Nov well looked after and during my op and on discharge was told to return 48 hours later to have dressing reduced and checked was told to come back to ward after 11am after waiting an hour was then told they couldn't see me and was transferred to barley court had to walk there from main hospital on crutches was then told as I had no appointment I would have to wait after a total of nearly 51/2 hours no dressings available and then being taken back to where I started from I felt really disappointed how I was treated I was then told my follow up treatment to remove stitches will not be done at the hospital but to contact my gp they do not carry out this procedure

I really feel that if it was an elderly person that this happened to I would be concerned I feel the after care response needs to be addressed

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback on your recent experience. I am very sorry to hear the concerns that you have raised regarding the aftercare you received following your procedure, please accept my sincere apologies for any distress this may have caused you. In some circumstances following a surgical procedure that requires the removal of stiches, this is carried out by the patients GP. However, I can only apologise to you that this information may not have been communicated to you. I will ensure all of your feedback is passed on to the Service so that they are aware. If you wish to discuss this further, please contact our Patient Advice and Liaison team, who will be happy to assist you in any way they can.

Our PALS team can be contacted by calling 01708 435 454 or by email PALS@bhrhospitals.nhs.uk.

Yours Sincerely

Kathryn Halford

Chief Nurse
