"cleanliness"

About: Nevill Hall Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I lay in a four bedroom ward. The old lady opposite was having her nappies changed as she was incontinent. This was being done by a single nurse who as a result dropped the dirty items soaked with urine on the floor.

One of the nursing aids came along and scooped the items up with bare hands and dropped them into a sack. The member of staff then came to help me into a chair to go to the toilet without washing or cleansing their hands.

I kept their hands away by saying I had to learn to help myself, but had to let them push the chair. In the loo I washed down the handles of the chair and avoided the member of staff touching me when they returned. I told the nurse before they went off duty.

Never heard any more.
