"My wife's care at Crosshouse"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Respiratory medicine

(as a relative),

My wife has been admitted to crosshouse on many occasions she has copd.

she needs oxygen 24 hours a day now but lots I times when I have visited her she is struggling to breathe because her oxygen is not on. I have told nursing staff about this lots of times but it still happens.

When she is admitted she is not allowed to take any of her normal medicines until prescribed by a hospital doctor this can sometimes mean she misses out on taking what she needs for nearly 48 hours in some cases.

Even getting a commode is a problem not a single admission has she not wet herself because she couldn't wait any longer after buzzing repeatedly she is in hospital at the moment and wet herself twice already.

I understand staff are busy but surely this makes more work for them let alone the embarasment my wife feels.

Trying to get information about what is happening with her treatment seems to be a major undertaking. The priority seems to be getting her discharged even when she shouldn't be. I have lost count of the amount of times she has been discharged only to be readmitted on the same day.

I am sorry if this looks like a bit of a rant but there are lots of other things happened during my wifes time in crosshouse I would be here for hours trying to list them

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear concernedhusband,

I understand why you chose your name here and why you are concerned.

I am really sorry; this is not helpful to you or your wife. Being unable to get a commode when it is needed is not dignified, as I said recently in another response; we should not have to leave our dignity at the door when we come in to hospital.

From your story there are a few points that we can take up with the charge nurse on the ward for clarity, e.g. the buzzer, the medication etc. It is in everyone’s interest to get the best support for your wife both in and out of hospital and I know a lot of work has been done looking at preventing the see-saw hospital admissions/discharge for people with conditions such as COPD.

Maybe there is an opportunity here to review your wife and her health. There are different ways of doing this and in order to help us to pave the way forward, it would be helpful if you could contact me and let me know your wife’s name, date of birth, GP's name and consultant’s name.

If you do want to contact me, you can email me on eunice.goodwin@aapct.scot.nhs.ukor phone me on 01563 826222. It would be great to get a chance to see what we can do to help.

Best wishes

Eunice
