I was diagnosed with Obstetric Choleystasis at 28 weeks. I was terrified at the prospect of delivering very early. I was diagnosed very quickly by my consultant and a plan put in place very quickly.
I was then seen at the maternity day assessment unit twice a week for bloods, CTGs and fortnightly ultrasound growth scans. The nursing staff and a student nurse in this unit were excellent, kept me calm and informed.
Due to my blood levels I was admitted on 2 separate occasions. Once in wd 22 and then wd 23. The staff were great and very helpful. I was put at ease immediately.
Eventually at 37 weeks I was taken into wd 24 to be induced. They were so busy and when I went into labour there were no available midwives to take over my care. So the ward manager stayed with me until a midwife was free. I always felt looked after and even though they were run of their feet the staff were bending over backwards to help me. My midwife Karen was phenomenal! I had complete confidence in her and she was great with me and my birthing partners.
Unfortunately my baby boy had complications after birth and was taken to the neonatal unit. He spent 13 days in the ward. It was the worst time of my life. If it was not for the care and expertise of the staff I dread to think what would have happened. The doctors and nurses/midwives kept us informed and kept myself and partner sane! I always knew my baby boy would have the best of care when we left. The clarkess and ward domestic would always smile and were lovely.
Thankfully my wee baby boy is now becoming a big baby boy all thanks to the hard work and dedication of the staff at Wishaw General. I owe them everything.
As a charge nurse myself in another Lanarkshire hospital I am very proud to be part of NHS Lanarkshire. It also proves to me how big a part we play in the lives of patients and their families and what we do and say stays with them always.
Thank You for everything.
