"Attitude towards a young mother"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Paediatrics Royal Hospital for Sick Children (Yorkhill) / Respiratory Medicine

(as a relative),

My granddaughter was recently sent to Crosshouse by her GP. She was really struggling to breathe (already had 2 hospital visits for this complaint beforehand). On arrival, it was stated by nursing staff that the baby was fine but was a GP referral.

I was not there at this point, it was my daughter (17 yrs), the baby's mum. She told me it was as if they were saying - oh she is fine but we need to take a look at her as her GP has sent her! Baby was admitted and when I arrived for visiting I was shocked at the way my daughter was being spoken to and treated. Baby's monitors were bleeping and flashing red - we went to try find a nurse... no-one there!

When we eventually found someone, they came into the room and muted the machine and walked back out! My daughter also asked if they had any teething gel she could have (she had only gone to the GP with her baby and did not expect to be sent in an ambulance to hospital so didnt have any of these things with her) - the reply from the nurse was that she was too busy. I was furious!

The treatment and lack of compassion my daughter and granddaughter received makes me very sad. I did not get the name of the 'rude nurse' but in future I will def be making a note of nurses names on duty. Its a shame - as the majority of nurses are brilliant (especially staff who put in the cannula feeding tube and staff while she was being observed)- but you always remember the ones who weren't.

After being in Crosshouse for 2 days, they were transferred to Yorkhill where the care she received was second to none. The nursing staff in HDU were so pleasant and helpful and could not do enough for the baby & my daughter. It turns out she had a very severe case of RSV. She has been home now for 5 days and was admitted again yesterday to Crosshouse. Consultant said they are not too concerned about her but would keep her in as a precaution due to her being very poorly for 2 weeks up in Yorkhill - daughter was told they would treat this as asthma and she would be out later that day.

We went to collect them and they had then decided that it was possibly a re-infection of what she previously had so she was kept in. As if it is not stressful enough having a baby in hospital very poorly - my daughter feels like she has been treated the way she was due to her age and being a young mother. I think this is awful that she has been made to feel this way. If I had of thought at the time I would definitely have taken the names of staff responsible for this and made a formal complaint. But of course, I had more important things on my mind.

I work in a small team in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde which seeks to involve patients and carers in the work of the NHS. The biggest part of my role is in managing feedback projects across the Board area, one of which is Patient Opinion. It is my job to give our patients and carers the opportunity to give us feedback, and to make sure that this is passed to the right people to help us improve the services we provide.

Dear chelle2,

Thank you for sharing the experiences of your daughter and granddaughter. I'm sure someone from Crosshouse will respond to the concerns you raise soon, but I wanted to acknowledge your post and thank you for your kind comments about the staff and service at Yorkhill. I have already passed these comments on to Jamie Redfern who is the General Manager for Paediatric Services, who has in turn passed on to all the team your comments and his thanks for keeping up these high standards.

I hope that your granddaughter has fully recovered and wish you and your daughter all the best.

Kind Regards,

Lorna

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear chelle2,

Both you and your daughter must have gone through a very difficult time with the wee one being in hospital. We should all feel that we have been listened to and cared for, irrespective of our age and I am sorry this is not how you both felt. I too am saddened by your post. I will pass this to the Management team for their consideration.

I am glad your care at Yorkhill was so good and I hope your granddaughter is on the mend now.

Kind regards,

Eunice

Update posted by chelle2 (a relative)

Thank you ladies for your response. My grand-daughter is back in hospital but is finally on the mend, and I must say - she has had the most amazing nurses this time round, and I will thank them personally as I do think it's important to praise a good job and caring staff too and not just complain when things are not so good.

Many thanks.
