"Kind and compassionate care"

About: Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford) / Accident and emergency

(as a parent/guardian),

I would like to thank all the staff we came into contact with a recent Sunday in November in A and E. Our 18 year old son is currently studying at Exeter university and my husband and I were visiting him for the weekend. He had been feeling poorly Saturday evening and early Sunday morning he called us at our hotel saying his condition had deteriorated and could we take him to A and E. His symptoms were headache, vomiting, cough and neck pain.

Whilst we were happy to take him I wasn’t even sure he would be seen considering experiences in Essex and London where we live.

I couldn’t have been more wrong. The reception staff were kind and helpful and he had seen a triage nurse within 20 minutes of our arrival. We then had a short wait to see the doctor who took blood tests to rule out meningitis and gave the diagnosis of a bad case of tonsillitis, I guess not the first student burning the candle at both ends We left 1 hr 40 mins after our arrival with antibiotics, extremely impressed with the care and understanding my son received.

The hospital was so clean and calm, everyone knew and delivered in their role I do not usually comment or write reviews but felt compelled to say thank you for everyone’s kind and compassionate care we received.

Thank you for taking the time to share such detailed and thoughtful feedback. We’re very pleased to hear that your son received prompt, compassionate, and reassuring care during what must have been a worrying morning for all of you.

It’s wonderful to know that the reception team, triage nurse, and doctor all helped ensure he was assessed quickly and thoroughly, and that you felt supported throughout his time in A&E. We’re also glad the diagnosis was clear and that he was able to leave with the treatment he needed in under two hours.

Your comments about the cleanliness of the department and the calm, organised manner of the staff are greatly appreciated. We will make sure your kind words are shared with the teams involved, they will be delighted to know the positive impact they had.

Thank you again for your heartfelt message. We wish your son a speedy recovery and hope he’s feeling much better.
