"Lack of dignity for patients"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I was recently sent down to Accident and Emergency by my GP due to having extreme left sided abdominal pain. I arrived at 6pm. I was told I would have my bloods and a scan done. I had bloods taken and was seen 8 hours later as there was no bed to see me in.

I was then referred onto another department and made to sit back out in the waiting room. Two hours later I was advised to go home with antibiotics and co-codamol and I will seen as an urgent outpatient.

I have never seen so many sick patients in my life, the waiting room was full of really unwell people who shouldn't have been left in the waiting room for hours upon end. I was so sad at the lack of dignity the patients have due to no hospital beds in wards for admitted patients therefore they are through awaiting a bed in A&E and therefore no beds for sick patients to be seen.

I feel this is completely unfair for patients and staff too, who I would imagine are working under pressure and are not able to give patients the care they deserve. This needs urgent action as we approach winter and therefore the pressures will just continue.

I believe you will lose some really exceptional staff due to being overworked, under extreme pressures and the aftermath of not being able to give patients the care they deserve, which is why they are in the job they are.

Really sad at our failing NHS service for patients and equally for staff.

Dear FixOurNHS,

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience with us. I am truly sorry to hear about the distress and discomfort you faced during your visit to our Emergency Deaprtment. Your feedback is very important, and I want to acknowledge the concerns you have raised regarding waiting times, patient dignity, and the pressures on both patients and staff.

Unfortunately, the challenges you described reflect the significant demand on emergency services across the country, particularly as we approach winter. While this does not lessen the impact on you, please know that our team is committed to providing the best possible care under these circumstances. We are actively working to improve patient flow and reduce waiting times, and your comments will be shared with the relevant teams to support these efforts.

I appreciate your recognition of the pressures staff are under, and I assure you that your concerns about patient dignity and staff wellbeing are taken seriously.

Thank you again for bringing this to our attention. Your voice helps us strive for better care for all patients.

Best wishes,

Julie.
