"Learning to walk without aids"

About: Rutherglen & Cambuslang Locality Support Service / ICST (Community Nursing, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy) Rutherglen & Cambuslang

(as the patient),

Hello,

I had a fall in the street.

A little girl walking behind me, with her parents, started playing with my long coat. She was pushing the coat from side to side.

I turned to tell her to stop, lost my balance and fell to the concrete. I broke my femur and my right hand.

The hospital operated on my leg, putting a metal rod down my leg to my knee. They also operated on my hand.

A few days later I had to go back for another operation on my leg as a nail had gone through a bone at my knee when they did the first operation.

During a check up at the hospital , I told the consultant that I was getting a lot of pains around my knee. I was sent for a scan and they  said  the screws at my knee were too close to my patella bone and would need to be removed. With the delay of 8 months till the removal of the screws, I contracted COVID.

Then NHS Rutherglen said they were sending someone to give me physiotherapy.

My physiotherapist, Beata, walked into my life  and I will be forever grateful for her assistance.

When Beata arrived I was walking with two crutches. The two crutches went down to one.

She then changed me onto sticks starting with  two sticks. It wasn't long before she had me walking with one.

Then on her final visit, I walked with no aids in my kitchen!

No crutches, no sticks.

Beata gave me confidence. She took me one step at a time and made me believe that, with her help, I would walk again without the assistance of crutches or sticks.

I am not yet at the stage where I can walk outside using nothing

but I still hear Beata telling me I can do it, and I will.

Thank you, Beata XX
