"Nursing staff were lovely but consultant was not"

About: Raigmore Hospital / Gastroenterology

(as a service user),

Routine bowel screening led me to be called in for a colonoscopy.

The prep was gruelling and by the time I arrived in the department 24 hrs later, I felt fragile and vulnerable.

The male HCA was lovely.

The nursing staff were lovely.

The consultant doing the procedure was not.

I feel they displayed poor patient facing skills.

They were abrupt to me and lacked compassion.

It felt like they were bored with 'yet another bowel screening programme colonoscopy'.

They brushed over my concerns and made me feel stupid for asking.

I sensed the nurses present may have felt this, and it seemed they were extra kind to me to make up for it.

What a shame.

Perhaps observe the HCA s and nurses for tips on effective communication skills and how to practice compassion.

Dear Janwe76

Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback and for all the lovely comments about our nursing staff, which I have forwarded to the nursing managers to share with the staff.

I sincerely apologise for the experience you had with the Consultant which is not the experience we wish for our patients. I have shared your feedback with Amie McCrae who is the service manager for Endoscopy & Urology and to enable us to look into this further, I would appreciate if you can contact Amie directly. Amies email address is amie.mccrae@nhs.scot

I would like to thank you for your feedback which allows us to improve our services for patients.

Kind regards

Liz Drummond
