Had a really negative Experience at the Royal Victoria Children's Accident and Emergency Department Belfast on with nightstaff nurses. My son has a severe learning disability, ASD and is non verbal. Nurse triaged us and asked us to sit in triage department. He waited for hours and began displaying challenging and aggressive behaviour towards myself to which another nurse asked us to move out into the waiting room.
I felt there was a complete lack of any compassion, understanding nor empathy towards us. Staff were standing around all night talking and not one came anywhere near us to reassure us that the wait wouldnt be much longer or to see if we were ok considering my son was being physically aggressive towards me for all to see as he was tired of waiting. For a profession of a nurse, which is supposed to be a caring role, I felt not one bit of care or compassion was shown to a disabled child. I also saw receptionist in waiting room look at us in disgust when my son was getting agitated and displaying behaviours. Absolutely disgusting and humiliating experience. I feel staff need training on dealing with children with learning disabilities and ASD.
