"A caring support network"

About: Belfast City Hospital / Belfast City Social Work Services Suffolk day Centre

(as a relative),

My two brothers' social worker Victoria has been extremely pleasant, helpful and engaging in every step throughout their journey. In a short time she got them both assigned to the suffolk day centre and while one of my brothers  hasn't been able to attend yet because of his condition and fear of new environments, my other brother has been excited about attending, making new friends and socialising at the centre, everyday he wakes up very early in the morning waiting to get on the bus ,arrive there and meet everyone.

My brother is also being supported by his support worker Harry who has become friends with him and is working hard to desensitise him to meeting people and overcoming his fear of open spaces and also the lovely Lisa, his dedicated nurse working relentlessly to help him with blood samples being taken and has become his best friend who makes him smiles every time she visits.

These might seem like small steps but they are huge milestones for them due to severe learning disabilities and thus it is important for them to be incorporated into society at their own pace.
We are grateful that they have such amazing support network and hoping they will continue to have such lovely spirits in their lives.

My name is Caroline McIvor, and I am the Team Leader in West Belfast Adult Learning Disability Team in the Belfast Trust.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience of the support both of your brothers have received from their Social Worker Victoria in the Learning Disability Team.

I am delighted to hear that your brothers have made such great progress and that one of your brothers is really enjoying attending the Suffolk Day Centre and is making good friends and is excited and waiting for the bus.

It is great to hear that your brother is making good progress with Harry helping him to overcome his fear of open spaces and meeting new people.

It is not always easy giving blood samples so it is brilliant to hear of the great work Lisa is doing to help your brother with his blood samples.

I understand the how big these milestones are for your brothers and all the work they put in to progress so well. You and your family must feel so proud of them both. You should feel proud of yourself too for the support you are providing to you brothers.

I will share your lovely story with Victoria, Harry, Lisa, Suffolk Day Centre staff the rest of the Learning Disability team. I know they will be so grateful for your lovely story, and delighted that your brothers are doing so well.

I just wanted to let you know that support is available to yourself and your family also through the Trust Carer Support Service. The Service provides a listening ear, training, dedicated events and advice for anyone in a caring role.

It is great to hear from you, and I wish your brothers, yourself and your family all the very best for the future,

Kind Regards
