"Thumb Tendon Repair after a Fractured Wrist"

About: General Surgery / Surgical Unit Ninewells Hospital / Trauma & Orthopaedics Perth Royal Infirmary / Trauma & orthopaedics St Andrews Community Hospital / Orthopaedics

(as a service user),

In May 2024 I fractured my left arm for a third time, each time in a different place, after a trip at work.  Ninewells Hospital took a non invasive approach and cast my arm.  During the time time my wrist was in a cast I felt a sharp pain and something snap after which I became aware I could not move the tip of my thumb.  Despite this, the orthopaedic discharged me from further care.

I attended my primary care GP who referred me to the amazing team at PRI and the incredible Dr Wigderowitz who arranged for me to have a surgical intervention in order to repair my damaged tendon.

Cue lots of visits to both NWHO and PRI for assessment and ultrasound, eventually surgery was undertaken at Strathcathro by the awesome team there.

I was the last in theatre and I know everyone had had a testing day. I was discharged at 19:30hrs into the care of a work colleague who lived nearby.  Nearly 8 weeks on I have regained the use of my thumb again, albeit I have some new scars to add to previous surgical scars.

I need the full use of my thumb for my job and I am beyond thrilled with the result.  I know how under pressure NHS staff are, but we are truly lucky to have such an organisation with such truly incredible people working within.

Thank you to everyone involved in my care, and also my ongoing care at St Andrews Community Hospital with the physiotherapy team you are all heroes.

Hi Karen

Thank you for sharing the story of your injury and journey of care of what must have been a complex surgery and treatment plan. We are delighted to hear your positive feedback about our teams and will be sure to share this with them. Best wishes for your continued physio and recovery.

Best wishes
