"Effective care for detached retina"

About: East Surrey Hospital / Ophthalmology

(as the patient),

After having pneumopexy 'gas bubble' treatment for a detached retina, which initially seemed to have some success, the retina re-detached and I required emergency treatment to save the sight in my right eye.

Mr Luke Herbert – Consultant Ophthalmologist Retinal Specialist – went ‘above and beyond’ to come into East Surrey Hospital on a Sunday afternoon, when officially on holiday, and performed a pars plana vitrectomy with silicone oil on my eye. This, together with subsequent all-round laser ‘welding’ in March, provided a very good result.

I have recently had further treatment under Mr Herbert to remove the silicone oil and sort out the induced lens cataract (an inevitable side effect of vitrectomy apparently) and my vision, although not yet back to what it was, is very good indeed – bordering on 6/6.

Many heartfelt thanks again to Mr Herbert and all the staff on his team.

Dear See right

Many thanks for taking the time to post such well informed and positive comments about your treatment under Mr Herbert and his team. It is really good to read how we were able to support you in what I'm sure was a very stressful situation.

I will personally e-mail your story to Mr Herbert so that he can read your kind words.

Kind regards

Ian

Update posted by See right (the patient)

No problem, it's a pleasure to be able to give praise where it's due - and while I'm on, the theatre staff who were on-call/on duty over the weekend I needed the emergency vitrectomy (Tina Munns and her team) also deserve a big mention for running around and helping to get everything prepared and ready for the op.

Thanks again.
