"99% of my experience was first class"

About: North Devon District Hospital / Intensive & Critical Care Unit South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust

(as the patient),

I want to leave some feedback for the staff at Barnstable Hospital, critical care unit. Everything was unbelievable. I didn't have full understanding at the time due to my injuries but this is what I do recall. I had broken 31 bones (hips, shoulder, spine and ribs). I would say 99% of my experience was first class.

There were a couple of hiccups. The first one was when the Physiotherapist tried to take tests from my stomach. I explained to them that they should test my nose, as this is where the issues were coming from. They didn't listen to me, however the nose test didn't work so I found this unhelpful.

The second occasion was when being transported by ambulance transport, they drove another 15 miles away from the direction of my house, in order to let someone else off. I could have been dropped off much earlier, without having to wait on the longer journey.

Everything else was first class and the staff were very good. The surgeon told me he would inject pain relief into my spine, as I had broken so many bones, it would be really painful, and I appreciated this so much!

The staff also removed my bed (I'm in a care home now) and replaced it with a hospital bed, which has a more supportive mattress. Again, I really appreciated this. I'm a survivor. I've survived 89 years and I'm healing from this every day. Thank you.

Hi - Thank you for taking the time to give some feedback. I am glad to hear that you have had such a positive experience overall.

Sorry to hear about the delay in getting dropped off and that you didn't feel listened to in regards to your physiotherapist. I'm happy to chat this further through with you if you would like - please feel free to email: rduh.otptnddh@nhs.net to get in contact.

The critical care team will be pleased to hear of your excellent recovery and I hope you continue to improve on your rehabilitation journey.

All the best,
