"I would like to know how many units I am allowed"

About: Adult community services / Nutrition and dietetics

(as a service user),

I would like to know how many units I am allowed. Prescription ordering service say 12, coeliac society say 14 for 75-year-olds.

Also, I would be interested if the changes to prescription ordering has saved money. I have to phone to order if no one is there. They phone back and then send prescription by post. I. e. two phone calls and postage.

Surely GP's should have been responsible for abuses under the previous system.

Dear Curious214, thank you for your post on Patient Opinion. With regard to the number of units you are allowed, the Rotherham guidelines are specific to Rotherham, and the Coeliac UK guidelines are only suggested amounts.

The amounts of units allowed is worked out and explained to each individual by the Dietitian at their appointment and information leaflets are provided in addition to this. With regard to the changes to prescription ordering, the changes were not to save money, but to provide a quality service to patients and ensure prescribing of products is fair and equitable for all patients in Rotherham.

However, I am sorry you have not been able to speak to someone when you have phoned. The telephones are staffed 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday and we offer an answer machine message service to patients for them to ring at their convenience at the weekends and evenings. In the instance that you were asked to leave an answer machine message, if you were happy to do so, you can state the products you require and an order could be raised straight away. Rotherham GPs have passed the management of these products to the Dietitians over 2 years ago and this was so patients can benefit from our Dietitian’s expert knowledge in this.

I hope this is helpful and answers all of your queries,

With best wishes,

Kerry
