"Physio services and support at Holywell Villa"

About: Holywell Hospital Holywell Hospital / Wellness Hub Antrim/Ballymena

(as a service user),

Having been admitted into the acute ward over Christmas 2022 and through Covid restrictions I was fortunate enough to get the support and expertise of Michael and Sandra who encouraged me when I was allowed to attend the weekly sessions.  During this admittance I spent a total of 18 weeks and I looked forward to each session.  Both Michael and Sandra listened to my story and pushed me week by week through positive reassurance and interesting and patient involved weights sessions.

Having been released from the acute wards I unfortunately did not cope as expected and had to be readmitted in June.  Covid restrictions had been laced and I was able to attend the gym every day.  I met Una who was just as helpful as the other staff and I felt I was amongst friends rather than a patient.  The use of the gym helped me and I don’t think I missed a day over my 5 week stay.

On discharge I was referred to the wellness hub and got a third chance to use the gym, I looked forward to seeing all the staff and in these sessions they really involved all the patients by doing group sessions and each person electing how many weights reps we would do.  This helped in not only my confidence but everyone else and it was great seeing everyone each week.

I know that exercise can really help lift your mood but having these fantastic people encouraging you every step of the way is magical.  I never once saw any of the staff without a smile and I will never forget Michael’s “guess what year the song was released on” which distracted us more.

They are a great team and I hope that they remain in post as they really are a fantastic asset to the trust.

Hi Penny the Cockapoo

My name is Catherine Ward and I am the Clinical Lead for the Physiotherapy Mental Health Service. I had read and responded to your mention of the physiotherapy gym sessions in your story about the Wellness Hub but I feel it is necessary to respond separately to this story.

Thank you for taking the time to write your story and acknowledge the wonderful team and the work they do. The team really does try to make the gym environment welcoming for all and tailor activity to the individual. We hope that this will help people find a form of physical activity they enjoy and want to continue to aid both their physical and mental wellbeing.

I agree that they are a fantastic team and a real asset and I know that sharing this feedback with them will spur them on to continue the work they do.

Wishing you all the best

Catherine Ward
