I had been referred by my GP to ENT as my voice had become hoarse for a number of weeks. After seeing the ENT consultant within one week of being referred I was then out on the list for a laryngoscopy as there were signs of something on my voice box. I was of course nervous and concerned of what it might be even though I have never smoked. Within two weeks I was booked into Pilgrim day patient and even through we live in Grantham, this was the first available appointment and it was comforting to be able to accept any available space.
On the day of the procedure the team were fantastic. On entering the building to register my car for the blue badge parking, the reception lady was very helpful and patient and completed the registration and I went up to the ward.
The staff on the ward were absolutely fantastic , very friendly , putting you at ease, asking how I was, and making sure I was comfortable. The anaesthetist came to see me and talked me through what he would be doing and then the consultant came and advised of the procedure. All of this kept me grounded and feeling I was in good hands.
I had to wait about 4 hours before being taken down but that was no problem at all, the hospital is busy and had lots of juggling to get people seen and the team on the ward were attentive and supportive.
The theatre team were fantastic, from the two who took me down, to the nurses who welcomed me into theatre and told me what would happen, the team in the theatre were jovial and seemed like a real team and that is something that really put me at ease. I felt safe and in good hands, they clearly work well together and this really helps when you are lying there nervous.
The anaesthetist came in and again explained everything he was doing and after he put the cannula into me he said we will see you soon and the next thing I knew I was being woken in the recovery room.
The nurse who was at the side of me was very comforting, asking how I was and making sure I was feeling ok. I thought it was a really nice gesture when the anaesthetist popped back in and wished me well when he could see I was awake, again that just makes you feel cared for and in good hands
I was then taken back to the ward and again the nurses were fantastic, making sure I was comfortable in the bed, offered me a drink and a sandwich and came to take my blood pressure and temperature several times
By 4:30 I was being discharged and ready to go home.
The whole experience at Pilgrim Boston was faultless , the care, team spirit and support was outstanding and my after care I am sure will be as sound.
We are very very lucky to have the service we have and we often hear of people being frustrated and let down, but we must remember that on the front line these teams of people do the best they can and my experience was absolutely faultless.
"The care, team spirit and support was outstanding"
