"My second childbirth experience"

About: The Princess Royal Maternity Unit (Glasgow)

(as the patient),

I had my second baby at the Princess Royal Maternity.

I had a fairly good experience at the start of the birth. Being my second child birth,  I felt the midwife on duty needed my promptings to go through all the necessary consents that I should give. The birth process was hugely uneventful . I spent most of my time in labour kneeling or pacing hence I was exhausted after birth.

After the baby had been cleaned up and checked and I and my husband served a light meal. I was asked to go to the shower. Knowing how exhausted I was, I wasn't sure I was strong enough to stand in the shower, there was a birth pool beside me which could have been filled for me to bathe in.

Shortly after giving this instruction, they stepped out of the room. My husband helped me out of the bed into the shower.  While there I started feeling dizzy and lightheaded.  I was weak to call on my husband so I approached the door beckoned on him to get me some water and told him I was dizzy. As he moved to drop the cup so he could support me better, I fell on the bathroom floor, passed out for a few minutes and regained consciousness.

I was lucky my husband held most of my body weight preventing a severe impact. He pressed the buzzer and the midwife attending to me and some other midwives on call that day came in. They checked my blood pressure and temperature.  Said I was fine and blamed my fall on flip-flops. My husband tried to explain to them he didn't think my standing in the shower was a good choice as I was very weak. I felt dismissed and did not feel confident the staff attending to me were sufficiently experienced to oversee my birth process alone.

Dear Giftzs88,

Firstly congratulations on the birth of your new baby. I am sorry to hear that after the birth you felt dismissed and had little confidence in the staff caring for you. We endeavour to make every women's experience a positive one. I would be happy to look into this further with your consent. My details are below if you would like to contact me. Thank you for adding your story and I hope to hear from you.

Best wishes,

Tracy Orr
