"Disabled facilities"

About: Hexham General Hospital

(as a carer),

Visited out patients at Hexham General Hospital last week with my husband who is in a wheelchair and uses zimmer frame to stand and transfer.  Needed to use the disabled toilet and I went in to help him. Dismayed to find the seat was not raised but of 'normal' height. Getting up again was very difficult and he became upset at the thought of having to summon help in front of the large number of people in waiting room. Also as soon as the door opened he would have been in full view of everyone.

Luckily, with a great deal of effort on both our parts I got him standing and back into the chair. Such a simple thing would have made such a difference. Looks like I will have to take our own on his next visit.

Otherwise, very caring and helpful staff.

Dear Patandpanda,

I am so sorry for this experience that you both had whilst using our facilities, and I am sorry too for the upset and stress that this caused for you both. Please be assured that I will share your feedback with the Estates team to look into the disabled facilities available to our patients and make improvements where they are needed. It is important to us to improve our services and so I thank you for taking the time to share this with us.

Kind regards,

Jan
